Canada’s Building Trades Unions Speak with Minister of Labour to Discuss Member Concerns Around Covid-19

Leaders of Canada’s Building Trades Unions participated in a call with the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Labour, to reiterate the need for strong health and safety measures in place on job sites across Canada due to the COVID-19 crisis. Building Trades members continue to work hard, every day, to build infrastructure needed by Canadians from coast to coast; and we are focused on advocating to ensure proper personal protective equipment and strong health and safety provisions are met on these sites.

“Our Canadian Executive Board appreciated the opportunity to speak with Minister Tassi, raising the concerns our members have working during these uncertain times,” said Robert Kucheran, Chairman, Canada’s Building Trades Unions. “Our discussions underscored what has always been the priority of the building trades – the health and safety of our members. This must continue to be at the forefront of our government, and we were pleased to hear that from the Minister. We must also be cognizant of other issues that are created by the unprecedented circumstances that we are facing with the COVID-19 situation, including the need for temporary solvency relief in multi-employer pension plans that are feeling the downward pressure of the market.”

“We will continue to advocate to ensure our signatory contractors have the support they need to keep their doors open and our members working in a safe environment. Like we have done in the past, Canada’s Building Trades Unions will continue to work with the government coming out of this crisis to ensure we build the much needed infrastructure our country and industries need, support our economy and continue to fight for a fair wage  policy on  Federal projects. We thank the Minister for her time today and will continue to communicate and collaborate with the government to advocate on behalf of Building Trades members.”[:]
