Leaders of Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU) participated in a call with the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, to discuss the impact the COVID-19 crisis is having on building trades members who are continuing to maintain and build critical infrastructure across Canada. The health and safety of building trades members on all job sites, including ensuring they have the optimum personal protective equipment available, remains the number one priority of the CBTU. Building Trades leaders will continue to work closely with the Government of Canada to determine a strong path forward to reinvigorate the economy.

“We are very appreciative of the generous time Minister McKenna took to listen to and speak with the Canadian Executive Board,” said Robert Kucheran, Chairman, Canada’s Building Trades Unions. “When we come out of this crisis – and we will – infrastructure spending will create a boost to the economy that will be much needed and the Building Trades will be a critical part of that solution. Construction represents about 14 percent of Canada’s GDP, and when you consider the multipliers around construction, that number increases immensely.”

“Through our local union halls across the country, we are able to put local people to work in their own communities on these projects. Through our world class apprenticeship and training programs we have and will continue to invest and train more apprentices than any other entity; and we will continue to focus on bringing in underrepresented groups – including Indigenous Peoples, women, New Canadians and young people.”

“Any meaningful stimulus spending must build the critical infrastructure needed to improve Canada while simultaneously providing lasting careers in the skilled trades. The CBTU applauds the Minister for her commitment to emerging from this crisis in the strongest way possible and we will continue to support the government to ensure that happens. La santé et la sécurité des membres dans tous les milieux de travail, y compris les mesures pour assurer la disponibilité de l’équipement de protection personnel optimal, demeurent la priorité des SMCC. Les dirigeants des métiers de la construction collaborent étroitement avec le Gouvernement du Canada pour établir un plan de relance économique robuste.

 « Nous sommes très reconnaissants du temps que la ministre McKenna nous a accordé pour discuter avec le conseil exécutif canadien », a affirmé Robert Kucheran, président des Syndicats des métiers de la construction du Canada. « Lorsque cette crise se terminera, les dépenses en infrastructure apporteront une stimulation économique cruciale et les métiers de la construction joueront un rôle essentiel dans cette solution. La construction représente environ 14 pour cent du PIB canadien et si l’on calcule l’effet multiplicateur entourant la construction, ce pourcentage augmente substantiellement ».

« Par l’entremise de nos bureaux syndicaux partout au pays, nous sommes en mesure de mettre au travail des gens locaux dans leurs collectivités pour ces projets. À l’aide de nos programmes d’apprentissage et de formation de renommée mondiale, nous continuerons d’investir pour former plus de nouveaux apprentis que tout autre établissement; nous poursuivrons aussi nos efforts pour augmenter la participation des groupes sous-représentés, notamment les autochtones, les femmes, les nouveaux Canadiens et les jeunes ».
