Statement on Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and honour the contributions to our society made by Black people and Black communities. The civil rights and organized labour movements have been intertwined for decades – many of the things we have advocated for have been the same – including livable wages, fair working conditions, and good benefits.

Canada’s Building Trades Unions are proudly celebrating Black History Month by highlighting partner organizations and initiatives that support Black workers in the Canadian unionized skilled trades.

Black History Month was officially recognized by the House of Commons in 1995. While Canada has increased diversity and equality since then, we still have a long way to go. CBTU does not tolerate racism whatsoever, in any form, and are committed to continuing to advocate for diversity and equality in the skilled trades.

About CBTU

Canada’s Building Trades Unions are an alliance of 14 international unions in the construction, maintenance and fabrication industries that collectively represent over 600,000 skilled trades workers in Canada. Each year, our unions and our signatory contractor partners invest over $300 million in private sector money to fund and operate over 175 apprenticeship training and education facilities across Canada that produce the safest, most highly trained and productive skilled craft workers found anywhere in the world. Canada’s Building Trades Unions represent members who work in more than 60 different trades and occupations, and generate six per cent of Canada’s GDP.
