The IBEW has been active for over 100 years and represents more than 675,000 electrical workers in Canada and the U.S. Electrical workers install and maintain lighting, electrical conduits, switches and converters, high technology building systems, fiber optics and voice/data/video equipment. The IBEW prides itself on the democracy that’s afforded to each of the affiliated local unions, which have the ability to establish their own bylaws, rules, and policies in concert with the IBEW constitution.
HISTORY
The IBEW was founded in 1891 in St. Louis, Missouri, during a time where wages were low but expectations of work were high. Workers earned as little as 15 to 20 cents per hour for a 12-hour day. Some worked for as little as $8.00 per week. The first Canadian local was organized in Ottawa in 1899, and since then, the IBEW has grown to represent 85 affiliated locals across Canada.
