The International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers has more than 100 locals in Canada and the U.S. It represents nearly 30,000 skilled tradespeople across North America who fabricate, test and apply insulation to pipes, tanks, boilers, ducts, refrigeration equipment and other surfaces subject to heat and frost.
HISTORY
First based out of St. Louis in 1903, representatives from the union’s first local put out a call for other interested trade locals to join. At a convention in July, the constitution and by-laws were drafted and adopted. In 1904 the association’s first formal name was adopted: the National Association of Heat, Frost and General Insulators and Asbestos Workers of America. In the 1980s, long-held concerns of the risks associated to exposure to asbestos were confirmed and “Asbestos” was dropped from the union’s official name.
