tradesperson tool deduction

As a tradesperson, your tools are how you earn your income. Your tools are now tax deductible when they are required by your employer –  for example, your basic tool list specified in your collective agreement. You can now claim up to $1,000 per year for the cost of these tools when filing your return. 

How to claim your tool deduction

The Trades Person Tool Deduction is claimed on form T777 Statement of Employment Expenses when filing your return, or using your preferred tax preparation software. 

Enter your claimed amount on Line 1770 on the T777 form.

 

What are eligible tools that you can deduct?

An eligible tool is a tool (including associated equipment such as a toolbox) that meets all of the following conditions:

  • You bought it to use in your job as a tradesperson and it was not used for any purpose before you bought it
  • Your employer certified it as being necessary for you to provide as a condition of, and for use in, your job as a tradesperson
  • It is not an electronic communication device (like a cell phone) or electronic data processing equipment (unless the device or equipment can be used only for the purpose of measuring, locating, or calculating)
