With more than 130 years of history, the UBC is one of the oldest and largest international building trades unions. The union represents almost half a million workers in Canada and the U.S. Members include carpenters, scaffolders, lathers, millwrights, floor coverers, millworkers and cabinetmakers who construct interior and exterior building elements from wood and other materials, and install floor and ceiling tiles and siding.
HISTORY
The UBC’s history dates back to a Chicago convention held in 1881, organized by UBC’s first general secretary, Peter J. McGuire. At the time, the UBC membership was 2,042 workers. In 1886 the UBC, led by McGuire, organized a general strike of carpenters on May 1st. The success of this strike led to better wages and working conditions in 53 cities across America, and further grew the membership and popularity of the UBC. By 1903, the union had a membership of more than 167,000.
