Types of Construction

Canada’s Building Trades Unions are active in building, maintaining and renovating residential, commercial, industrial and public infrastructure projects.

  • Residential construction projects include single-family and multi-family residential buildings.
  • Commercial and Institutional construction projects include commercial buildings, such as offices, hotels, retail malls and warehouse complexes, and institutional buildings such as schools, hospitals, libraries and sporting facilities.
  • Industrial construction projects include manufacturing and processing facilities, refineries, mines, pipelines and power plants.
  • Public Infrastructure construction projects include highways, bridges, dams, water and sewer lines, and power and communication lines.
