Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART)

Representing more than 150,000 members in North America, the SMART has been in operation since 1888. Members of the union fabricate and install metal construction components including roofing, coping and flashing, commercial kitchens, and industrial systems. They also install and service heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems.

HISTORY

The SMWIA has been in operation since 1888 where it was first known as the Tin, Sheet Iron and Cornice Workers’ International Association. The first Canadian local chartered in Toronto, Ontario in 1896. By 1901, union membership grew to about 5,581 workers across 108 locals, and in 1903 the name officially was changed to the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association.
