International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT)

International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT)

Recognized as being one of the most active unions in the labour movement, IUPAT represents more than 160,000 skilled construction tradespeople in Canada and the U.S. today. Painters and allied tradespeople apply paints and industrial coatings, hang wallpaper, glaze windows, finish drywall, install floor coverings and create signs and displays.

HISTORY

First known in 1887 as the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America, the union acquired a membership of more than 7,000 workers across more than 100 local unions within its first year of operations. Among their many accomplishments in the 1900s, include fighting for and winning the right to a half-holiday on Saturday for members, and establishing the eight-hour work day and five-day work week in 1918. Though by the late 1920s membership had risen to 115,000, it fell to 60,000 in 1929 following the onset of the Great Depression.
