International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC)

International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC)

The IUEC’s 25,000 North American members assemble, install, maintain, repair and replace elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walkways and similar equipment. In 2001, the union celebrated its 100th anniversary. The IUEC has its own Industry Educational Program, Industry Work Preservation Fund and competitive benefits plan for members.

HISTORY

Like many unionized trades, the industrial revolution marked the beginning of many North American unions, including the IUEC. Built on organizations formed in the 1890s, the IUEC was founded in 1901 by 11 men in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Deciding that each of their respective locals would benefit from a collective effort, the founders quickly drafted rules of order, by-laws and a constitution, and applied for a charter and membership in the National Building Trades Council of the American Federation of Labour—most of which took place in a single day.
