International Brotherhood of Teamsters

International Brotherhood of Teamsters

With more than 1.4 million members in North America, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is the continent’s largest, most diverse union. Including Canada, the United States and Puerto Rico, there are nearly 1,900 affiliates. Members of the 35 Teamster locals in Canada provide packaging, transportation and warehousing of goods and materials in almost every sector of the economy, including the construction sector.

HISTORY

Founded in 1903, the International Brother of Teamsters began as a merger of two leading team driver associations, the Team Drivers International Union (TDIU) and the Teamsters National Union. Together they created the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). The role of these drivers in the transportation of goods served as a cornerstone of America’s economic growth in the early 1900s. The IBT was also one of the very first unions to recognize the importance of organizing women into the union.
