Stone masons install masonry materials such as stone, brick and cement blocks to build, maintain or restore walls, patios, arches, fireplaces, chimneys and other structural and decorative elements of new and old buildings. They also lay fire brick and other heat- and chemical-resistant materials used in industrial furnaces, retorts and boilers.

These tradespeople typically:

  • read and interpret building plans, and calculate materials needed
  • measure and plan masonry patterns and apply plumb lines to ensure level layers
  • cut stone and other materials to fit
  • spread mortar, lay stone and remove excess mortar
